There are few requirements for membership and little initial cost to get started. We can provide some basic costume until you are ready to progress and get your own kit. Membership fees are there just to cover the cost of the insurance that all reenactors require.

 

So you have decided to have a go, and come along to your first session, what happens next?

Firstly every one starts off as a Thrall. This serves two purposes, firstly we can provide suitable temporary clothing for thralls to minimise the cost of getting started, secondly it allows new members time to find their feet and decide if reenacting is for them and what they want to get out of being a reenactor. Do you want to principally get involved in the combat side of things or do you want to pick up a trade and learn the associated craft, or some mix of both. Every Thrall will be assigned another member as master and mentor to provide help and guidance in your development.

Thralls are judged on their commitment, knowledge of their chosen area, and their interaction with the general public at our shows. We would expect people to be on the road to having at least their own basic kit and be able to discuss with our visitors both a general knowledge of Viking history and the details of their profession and equipment.

This then leads to gaining ones freedom and becoming a member of the Bondi (freeman) class. People then can grow within this class, extending their costume and equipment to grow their alter egos story and position.​ The pace at which you do so is entirely up to you and we can advise on what is appropriate.
